Boundary-defying artist Cheef Chebe is out with his vibrant Afrobeat EP Mutani on April 4, 2025, a project born from a cosmic collision of musical destiny and cultural activism. What began as a chance reunion with Fela Kuti’s former lead guitarist BB Blues in a Kokrobite beach bar has blossomed into a six-track manifesto for pan-African renewal under Chebe’s MASA/Waka-waka Movement (Make Africa Sweet Again).
The EP’s creation story rivals its musical brilliance. During what was meant to be casual drinks, Chebe (the Glasgow-based Ghanaian polymath known by countless names, including Suleman Chebe and Pulimjasco) and legendary producer BB Blues ignited a creative firestorm. Their impassioned dialogue about Africa’s global identity and artistic potential yielded three tracks recorded in a single, electrified studio session – a fusion of traditional Djembe rhythms, celestial Balafon melodies, and BB Blues’ iconic Afrobeat guitar work honed alongside Fela himself.
“Mutani isn’t just music – it’s ancestral technology,” declares Chebe, whose journey from Ghanaian oral storyteller to Scotland’s renaissance man informs every note. “When BB and I played, we weren’t just making songs. We were tuning into centuries of resilience to power tomorrow’s rebirth.”
Mutani arrives as both homecoming and revolution – proof that when tradition and spontaneity collide, borders dissolve. The April 4th release coincides with Ghana’s Independence Month, with listening events planned in Glasgow and Accra featuring live demonstrations of traditional instruments.
