Ghanaian music duo DopeNation, composed of identical twins B2 and Twist, are making waves in the music industry with their unique sound and impressive production skills. In a recent interview with the BBC, the award-winning producers turned recording artists shared insights into their journey and the creation of their distinct genre, Ghanapiano.
B2 and Twist, who have been working together since their university days, have collaborated with renowned artists such as Shattawale, Joey B, and Olamide. They credit their success to word of mouth, recalling how artists would seek them out in the university hallways to work on beats for their songs. This experience gave them a deep understanding of the potential their own music could have if they ventured into the spotlight as artists themselves.
Their debut song “Eish,” released in 2018, became an instant hit, paving the way for more successes in their career. In 2022, they released “Gboza,” a track heavily influenced by the popular amapiano genre from South Africa. B2 and Twist coined the term “Ghanapiano” to describe their unique fusion of amapiano with Ghanaian highlife and hiplife music. The result was a refreshing and innovative sound that captivated audiences.
During a visit to Ghana, South African DJ and producer Champuru Makhenzo provided valuable mentorship to DopeNation. They had the opportunity to learn from him, exploring different samples and recording techniques. The twins highlight the differences between the energetic bounce of Afrobeats and the laid-back nature of amapiano. Through this collaboration, they were able to refine their sound and birth the genre of Ghanapiano.
“Ghanapiano is a musical experiment for us… a new genre fusing amapiano with our Ghanaian highlife and hiplife,” explain B2 and Twist. Their seven-track EP, also titled “Ghanapiano,” further showcases their ability to seamlessly blend these musical styles, creating a fresh and captivating listening experience.
DopeNation’s journey exemplifies the power of cross-cultural collaboration and the exploration of new musical territories. By infusing amapiano elements with their Ghanaian roots, they have carved out a unique space for themselves in the industry. Their innovative approach has garnered attention and admiration from fans and fellow artists alike.
As DopeNation continues to push boundaries and experiment with their sound, they are undoubtedly leaving an indelible mark on the Ghanaian music scene. With their infectious beats, catchy melodies, and undeniable talent, B2 and Twist are poised to make even greater strides in the years to come.
