South African dance music duo Major League DJz joined Tim Sweeney on Apple Music for an in-depth conversation about their evolving sound, the global rise of their music, and their latest creative endeavor — the Untitled mix series on YouTube.
Known for their groundbreaking work in Amapiano, the twin brothers Banele and Bandile Mbere revealed they’re moving into uncharted sonic territory with what they call Beyond Piano — a progressive blend of Afro House and Amapiano.
“We have this thing called Beyond Piano,” Banele explained. “It’s still House like Amapiano is, but slowed down. Now we’re taking the tempo up and still using the log drum. A lot of people call it a mixture of Afro House and Amapiano.” Despite the shift in direction, the duo emphasized that they haven’t abandoned their roots. “It’s not that we’re leaving Amapiano behind,” said Banele. “It’s just the evolving process of Major League DJz.”
Part of that evolution is captured in their Untitled mix series on YouTube — a visual and sonic documentation of their journey through genres like Afro House, Afro Tech, dance, and 3-Step. “That’s us continuing the evolution,” Banele told Sweeney. “It’s creating a world for us to play in, something that we can carry to the world. Something you guys can watch on TV, where you can see the process.”
He added, “It’s not that we are leaving Balcony Mix behind, it’s just the evolution of different phases in our life. And it’s there for you to see — that’s why it’s on YouTube.” The duo also hinted at unreleased material, including an early version of their hit “Come With Me” featuring Jorja Smith — underscoring their growing presence in global dance music circles and their commitment to innovating within and beyond South African sounds.
