Tyla Wins Best African Music Performance at 2024 Grammys


South African singer Tyla emerged victorious at the 2024 Grammy Awards, securing the inaugural Best African Music Performance award for her chart-topping single “Water.”

The prestigious accolade, presented at the 66th Grammy Awards Premiere Ceremony in Los Angeles, marked a breakthrough moment for the 22-year-old artist.

Tyla’s triumphant win saw her outshine formidable Nigerian contenders for the category, including Davido, Asake, Burna Boy, and Ayra Starr. Notably, “Water” achieved global success, ranking in the top 10 across 16 countries and introducing Tyla’s talent and artistry to international audiences.

In her acceptance speech, Tyla expressed her gratitude and disbelief at winning “a Grammy at 22 years old.” She also acknowledged the importance

“If you don’t know me, my name is Tyla. I’m from South Africa and last year God decided to change my whole life, so thank you so much to God,” she said.

“Thank you to my team, my family; I know my mother’s crying somewhere in here. Thank you to the Recording Academy for this category. It’s so important and I know I’m forgetting some things, but I won a Grammy! Thank you, thank you.”

Speaking to the Recording Academy after accepting her first Grammy award, Tyla exclaimed how she was “shaking” and was honoured to win the award.
