We Were Not Treated Like Celebrities In Nigeria – Yaw Tog

Yaw Tog

Ghanaian rapper Yaw Tog has recounted how there were welcomed and handled in Nigeria as any ordinary people when they visited there during the 8th edition of the AFRIMMA Awards.

“Nigerians received us as normal human beings, they didn’t value us as celebrities” – Yaw Tog Disclosed.

Born Thorsten Owusu Gyimah Yaw Tog, one of the many known rappers from Kumasi famed as the asakaa rappers are one of the recent Ghanaian celebrities to join the banter between Ghana and long-time rivals Nigeria. This comes after the former accused the latter of not paying heed to the talent of her people and thus do not promote them in their country.

This sparked several arguments in both Ghana and Nigeria in December last year and had many divided opinions in these two countries. While some netizens blame musicians for not producing music that suits their taste and preference, some musicians have also recriminated industry players for the fall in traction of Ghanaian music.

According to the “Sore” hitmaker, Nigerians were not friendly to him, his female counterpart Gyakie and another colleague Kofi Jamar among others.

In his opinion, he stress that they were explicitly opposed and never recognized as super stars in Nigeria.
“When it comes to Ghanaian artist, Nigerians don’t treat you as one of their top artists, instead they treat you like an ordinary person.”

“You can’t expect to be treated like Davido or Burna Boy there,” he stated as he discloses their ordeal in Nigeria to Y 107.9 FM’s Kojo Manuel during the ‘Dryve of your lyfe’.

“When we got there, they treated us differently; everything was normal as opposed to Ghana where we would have received some special attention.” Says the rapper. “Things were tough out there” he stated.

This has come to justify the fight Shatta Wale had initiated in December last year arguing that Nigerians only pay attention to their artist and no one else. This he explained isn’t healthy for the music industry since you can’t have me promoting your craft in my country whereas I don’t get back that same favour from you.
